Babies and New Family Members

Babies have been the key subject at home in the last few weeks with a new addition. A previous comment about medical insurance has got me thinking.

Those things around Babies and New Family members you need to be aware of that can trigger a need to have a chat with us.

If you have medical insurance, adding your new baby within 90 days will mean you don't have to declare any conditions on an application form, and any conditions your baby develops can be covered.

What's not covered?

Standard congenital conditions exclusions do apply, though lots of things can happen to babies between birth and even six months old. It's better to have the opportunity to avoid lengthy medical disclosures by getting it done now.

Adding Baby will come with an additional premium cost, but with some insurers, if this is an additional baby and there are other children on your policy, then there may not be any extra premiums.

Other covers?

The other insurance you need to be aware of is around your Trauma and Critical Illness covers. With these covers, they often include or can include coverage for your children.

Some providers will cover them automatically, some will need to have this coverage noted, and others will need you to complete applications and charge additional premiums, often not very much but more than without children on them.

This one is one where it's a good idea to get an adviser involved to review your current policy to ensure you get it right. With some covers it might talk about this in the policy document, if it's not on your policy schedule, then there isn't any cover. Pays to get it right.

Property Insurance

Other insurance to consider if this is your first baby and maybe if this is an additional child, are your contents and car coverage for baby's things.

You will have purchased/acquired cots, strollers, car seats and all manner of things you didn't previously have. Making sure you have the right cover in this area is essential as accidents and loss at this point, especially if you have dropped to one income for a while, can be hard to bear.

Your contents insurance is the policy you need to cover a damaged stroller or if it is nicked, while the car seat is covered under the vehicle cover in a vehicle accident.

Your 'contents', such as the stroller and other baby gear, are covered by contents insurance rather than the car cover.

Talk to an adviser

Again it pays to get these details checked out with an adviser.

If you do have a new baby, Congratulations!

I look forward to a friendly chat with you to help where I can, get in touch
